Course Description: According to the College Board: “The AP chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year.” That being said, you will need to work hard in this class if you want to succeed.
General Expectations:
Since this is a college level course, I expect you to take it very seriously. We will move fast and the subject matter is comprehensive. Therefore it is in your best interest to:
1) Be on time 2) Attend regularly 3) Ask lots of questions and ask for help
4) Do your reading and homework EVERY DAY 5) Be responsible
Grading Expectations: Grades are a reflection of your mastery of content and skills in a particular class. For AP Chemistry this mastery includes content in chemistry, and skills related to critical thinking and communication. You will be given more than one opportunity to show your mastery.
Remember: You are trying to pass the AP Exam at the end of the year. For this reason, all coursework is designed to give you practice for that exam. For that reason you are encouraged to redo or make up low scores to improve content mastery and academic grades.
To draw an analogy: If a person competes in most any endeavor, they practice, get feedback, practice more, and get more feedback, and then compete. Quizzes, assignments and such (formative assessments) are for practice: These are opportunities for the student to practice and get feedback on how to improve. If the student never practices (tracked assignments), no feedback can be given and no opportunity for improvement will occur. Tests (Summative assessments) are the actual competitions or games: These are the opportunities for students to demonstrate their mastery of the necessary skills and subject matter.
Grades are weighted with the following values:
Summative Assessments (Tests and some labs) = 75%
Formative Assessments (most labs, quizzes, and in-class assignments) = 20%
Homework Tracking (self checked homework) = 5%
The Grading Scale is a standard scale:
93-100% = A 83-86% = B 73-76% = C 63-66% = D 0-59% = F
90-92% = A- 80-82% = B- 70-72% = C- 60-62% = D-
87-89% = B+ 77-79% = C+ 67-69% = D+
Required Materials:
o 3 ring binder for this class
o Pencil or pen
o Scientific calculator
o Loose leaf paper
o Lab notebook
o Textbook
Technology Expectations:
My website: http://colemanapchem.weebly.com/
o Class activities, including assignments and makeup requirements, will be posted, as well as announcements, copies of class notes, and resources you may need to be successful in class.
o ALL STUDENTS should be checking the website every day.
Skyward: Grades can be checked on Skyward at any time. I will do my best to keep them current.
Email: Please email any questions or concerns to me when possible: [email protected]
Remind101: this is away that I can sent the entire class text message alerts and reminders.
Academic Criteria:
Tests
Expect 1 test every unit (1-2 chapters)
Tests are closed note.
Tests will be scaled to the highest score in the class.
You can retake tests within five school days of the class getting it back to get a better score.
If you miss a test for an excused absence, it must be made-up before or after school within three days of the original test.
Quizzes ·
Expect a quiz almost every day and are meant to get you used to the style of the AP exam. These quizzes are closed note will be timed. You will not get the opportunity to make them up as they are to serve as a gauge to see how you are doing with the material. That being said, they will only be worth 5-10 points each.
If you miss a test for an excused absence, it must be made-up before or after school within three days of the original quiz.
In Class Assignments:
If you miss an assignment for an excused absence, it must be made up within five days of when it was assigned.
Homework
You will be assigned homework every day and will be due the next time we meet.
Homework will be self-graded. I will keep the keys to the homework in my classroom, though some will be posted on the website. It is up to you to be honest when you grade your own work. I will only spot check the work for tracking purposes. If you have questions, you can come in during my office hours and I will be glad to help you!
You are expected to do your homework. If you don’t you will not be practiced for the test.
Late work is only accepted with a late pass up until the end of the unit.
Labs:
Lab experience is an extremely important part of the AP Chemistry curriculum. Although I cannot require you to take the AP lab course at the University of Utah, you should know that there is a lab section on the AP exam, most AP Chemistry students take the lab course, and so it is important that you consider taking the University-run labs.
University Labs:
· The Labs will be conducted at the University of Utah.
· Schedule is TBD
· There are 14 Labs during the academic school year.
· The fee for 2 semester hours of credit including lab fees is approximately $400 (This is in contrast to regular tuition of $1084 plus $134 for lab fees).
o Lab fees will be paid to the University (not to me)
· Labs will be graded by the University instructors and that grade will be a University Grade.
In Class Labs: in addition to the University-run labs, there will be a number of smaller labs done within the class that will count as part of your grade.
· If you miss a lab, it must be made-up before or after school within 5 school days of the original lab.
· There is a $10 materials fee for in-class labs that will be paid the second week of class.
Attendance: Attendance is critical to being successful in AP chemistry. Missing class and being late will make it difficult to keep up on the material and complete valuable classroom experiences. Please be on time to class.
§ If you miss class due to an excused absence, it is your responsibility to find out what work needs to be made up by checking the webpage.
§ Late work is only accepted with a late pass up to the end of the unit. Late passes can be earned by working on chemistry during my office hours. This can include tutoring my general or honors kids. J
§ Missing class for a school excused absence does not mean that you don’t have to do the work. You do. It is in your best interest to find out what you are going to miss BEFORE you leave so that you don’t fall behind.
Supplemental Materials:
· Though it is not required you may want to get an AP Study Guide. The ones I recommend are the Barons or the Princeton Review.
· The AP Central website for chemistry is a good place to go to get the most recent practice materials: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-chemistry/exam-practice
